Cosimo was an Italian banker and politician, the first member of the Medici political dynasty that served as de facto rulers of Florence during much of the Italian Renaissance. He was a patron of the arts and supported many artists, writers, inventors and thinkers. He also commissioned the construction of many notable buildings in Florence, such as the Palazzo Medici and the Church of San Lorenzo. In other words he financed most of the cultural and educative pursuits. Providing capital for the transportation of old texts was his main focus, giving the opportunity for many translators of the time to dive into the knowledge of the past in a free manner. Reason for the richness of the renaissance period in terms of discoveries from the past.  Making Florence the intellectual capital of the world during the renaissance period.
