The Mayan calendar is a complex system of calendars that was used by the ancient Maya civilization. Its composed of several interconnected calendars that served different purposes and tracked various cycles of time. The two most well-known calendars are the Tzolk'in and the Haab'.The combination of the Tzolk'in and the Haab' calendars created a larger cycle known as the Calendar Round, which repeated every 52 Haab' years (18,980 days) or 73 Tzolk'in years. To specify a particular date within this cycle, the Maya used a system of Long Count, which is based on a continuous count of days from a fixed starting point called the "Creation Date."The Long Count calendar used a series of nested cycles to measure time, including the k'in (day), winal (20 days), tun (360 days), k'atun (7,200 days), and b'ak'tun (144,000 days). A full Long Count date would include all these cycles and could represent a span of several thousand years. The most famous Long Count date associated with the Maya is December 21, 2012, which marked the end of the 13th b'ak'tun.It is worth noting that the widespread notion that the end of the 13th b'ak'tun on December 21, 2012, signaled an apocalyptic event or the end of the world was a misinterpretation. They rather believed in the beginning of a new cycle in human consciousness. As there are independent studies that have come to the conclusion that this calendar overall marked cycles where our species alternates between states of awake and asleep periods. In other words, states of caos and enlightenment periods. Meaning that 2012 was the entering of a reawakening cycle.
